Proton VPN — Free Start
The only one of the three with an unlimited-data free tier, plus the deepest privacy stack: Swiss jurisdiction, audited no-logs, Secure Core multi-hop. The catches: the free app auto-connects to the fastest free server among 10 countries — country choice is paid-only. In our Aug 11, 2026 test (Korea, SK Broadband, separate machine) the free plan auto-assigned a US server (WireGuard) and averaged ~336 Mbps over three runs at ~168 ms ping; we didn’t measure a no-VPN baseline on that machine, so no retention percentage is given. Skip it if you need whole-family coverage (1 device free, 10 on Plus) or streaming is your top priority (untested by us). The free/paid boundary is mapped in Free vs. Plus.
NordVPN — Speed & Security Features
In our Korea test it held ~79% of baseline to US servers and US Netflix worked. NordLynx plus Double VPN and Threat Protection make it the feature-dense pick. Skip it if you want to start free (no free tier) or your household runs more than 10 devices.
Surfshark — Multi-Device & Value
Unlimited simultaneous connections is the headline difference, and it posted our best speed result (~87% of baseline). CleanWeb and MultiHop are included. Skip it if you want free entry, or you’re the type to sign up off the advertised monthly rate without checking the first-payment total and renewal price — long-term plans are where that check matters most.

Proton’s free tier measured ~336 Mbps (US auto-assigned server) in a separate Aug 11 test on a different machine, so we don’t rank it directly against the July 3 runs.
Q. All three pay you commissions. Why should we trust this?
