The order to check
1. Confirm the server region
Free, instant, and it sets the floor for everything else. If you are connected to a distant data center by mistake, nothing downstream matters until you fix that.
2. Rule out the physical layer
Cable, port, wired versus wireless, router restart. Cheap, fast, and a frequent cause of the symptoms people attribute to routing.
3. Check NAT if the symptoms match
Only if you are seeing matchmaking, hosting, or voice problems. If your issue is plain delay, skip this.
4. Check DNS if connection fails at the start
Only if you cannot get in at all, or authentication hangs. If you are already in the match and lagging, DNS is not the cause.
5. Compare a route change last
After the above. With a baseline, identical conditions, and recorded numbers.
A practical warning about compounding
If you change region, enable UPnP, switch resolvers, and connect a tunnel in one session, you will not know which one mattered. Worse, two of them may interact — a tunnel altering NAT behavior while you were trying to fix NAT, for instance.

Region settings, connection methods, and account behavior are governed by each publisher’s terms of service, and those differ by title and change over time. Some games treat region manipulation differently from ordinary connection use. Read the current terms for the games you play, and treat the publisher’s documentation as the authority.

Should I set my server region manually or leave it automatic? Automatic works well when it picks correctly. Check what it chose. If it selected a distant region, setting it manually to a nearer one is usually the stronger option — but confirm the game allows it and that matchmaking populations there are healthy.
Will opening ports fix my ping? No. Port configuration affects reachability and NAT behavior, not travel time. If your complaint is delay, this is the wrong lever.
Does changing DNS make games faster? It can shorten the initial lookup, which affects how quickly you connect. It does not affect in-match delay, because resolution has already finished by then.
My NAT got worse after connecting a VPN. Is that normal? It is a known interaction. Traffic arriving through a shared endpoint can behave more restrictively for inbound connections. If peer-to-peer features degraded right after you enabled a tunnel, disconnect and re-test.
